Elise stood suddenly, startling the rest who sat by her on the balcony. She walked over to the railing and looked over. The rest followed, trying to see what caught her attention.

“I thought I saw something move in the tree line back there,” she said.

“Impossible. Someone would have to get by the guards in front, or scale the cliffside in back to get to those trees,” Angard said. “Believe me, no one is scaling that cliff. I’ve tried.”

“She is right, I thought I saw something moving there also,” Alonzo said.

“Alonzo, Thellus, how good are you with a sword?” Elise said. “If there is someone there, we need to get there quick.”

“’Im not much of a fighter, but I can learn rather quickly. This is exciting,” Thellus said.

“Exciting? What's wrong with you, Partegon? What's exciting about fighting?” Miretta said.

“Not fighting, but learning how to fight. My interests lie in learning. Understanding, learning, knowledge of any kind excites me. I’ve never been in a situation where I've had to defend myself, or others. This kind of learning will be new. Thus, exciting. Just hand me a weapon, and I can learn enough in a few moments that will get me through to learning more. I love my ability.”

“Angard, take Thellus to the armory and get him equipped. Miretta, you can go back to your quarters, or get one of the guards to escort you home. Alonzo, you come with me. We are going to go scope out the fields back there.”

“I don’t get a weapon?”

“I see a weapon at your side. That doesn’t work? It looks like Tangie’s NIP.”

“It doesn’t. It's just a handgun. Nothing special about it. But I’m out of ammo, something that I can’t replenish in this land. I’m pretty good with a bow… get me one of those, and I can provide support.”

“I’ll grab you one and a quiver on the way down.”

Elise left the balcony as Alonzo followed. They rushed down several flights of stairs, stopping by the armory to get a bow and quiver. Elise watched while Alonzo inspected the bow and equipped the quiver. He pulled out an arrow and held it in his hand, ready to use. Elise motioned for him to follow once more as they finished walking down several more flights of stone stairs.

Angard and Thellus were waiting for them at the door that led to the fields. Thellus was wearing some lightweight leather armor and held a small buckler in one hand, and a short sword in the other. Angard held his two enchanted daggers. Elise pulled the small metal rectangle that once belonged to Tangie’s father from inside her leather woven vest. She tapped and swiped her fingers in a specific sequence along the side and front of the small metal rectangle, and it started to convert itself. It elongated and extended until it was converted to a long staff. The end of the staff had Tangie’s new addition: a sharp blade.

“More of Derrick Tesser’s technology, I see. Very interesting. You will have to let me study that sometime,” Thellus said.
